#BIM25 Delegate Travel Results

Delegate travel has the most significant impact on the total carbon emission of the services ETOA sells (the ‘Scope 3’ emissions described in our Climate Action Plan: we use revenue from our events to fund projects aligned with science-based emissions reductions goals).

Current Findings:

 

To reach #BIM25*: 

  • Delegates took an average of 1.74 different modes of transport per person. 
  • Almost two thirds of delegate journeys included public transportation (59%). 
  • One in four delegates took a short-haul flight (24%); making up 14% of all modes of transport taken. 
  • Nearly half of delegate journeys included a train (48%); making up 28% of all modes of transport used. 
    • One in five delegates took a long-haul train (19%); 11% of all modes of transport taken. 

Travel purpose: 

  • 84% of delegates travelled exclusively for #BIM25, while one-sixth combined their trip with other activities. 

 

*80 respondents reporting 139 transport modes taken (as at 12.02.2025). ETOA uses ‘Travel Purpose’ to estimate the percentage of delegate travel emissions reasonably attributable to ETOA Scope 3 activity. Final results will be taken as representative of total delegates.
