ZEERO GROUP Announces ETOA as First Contributor to Sustainable Fuels Initiative

London, UK, 27th June 2025ZEERO GROUP, a pioneering travel industry collaboration dedicated to sustainability, today announced the European Tourism Association (ETOA) as the first official contributor to its sustainable fuels joint venture initiative, ZEEROENERGIES.

ZEEROENERGIES leads the way in the travel industry by dedicating climate funds to the advancement of sustainable biofuel production and the transition away from fossil fuels.

A trade association for tour operators and suppliers in European destinations, the ETOA will be an invaluable partner in the ZEEROENERGIES initiative, serving to contribute climate funds collected during the association’s various meetings and events. The ultimate goal is for ETOA to inspire its 1,100+ members to join the ZEEROENERGIES mission – and add small climate contributions of just ~€3 to each booking. Aggregating these climate contributions will help accelerate sustainable fuel development and support the industry’s progress toward the 2050 zero carbon emissions goal.

ZEEROENERGIES, for its part, provides a ‘waste-to-fuel’ Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL) project, offering all-in-one sustainable fuel production and waste management. It leverages patented technology to convert organic biowaste (including sewage, agricultural waste and food waste) into biofuel – enabling end-users to clean up their waste and convert it into the renewable fuels necessary for decarbonisation. ZEEROENERGIES sustainable fuel is 81% lower in emissions than fossil fuels. Besides being used as ‘drop in’ fuels for aviation, marine, and road vehicles, ZEEROENERGIES fuel can be used to power generators without the need for a refinery. This allows both the timely cleaning of waste and provides regions with clean energy independence.

Nico Nicholas, CEO & Co-founder of ZEEROGROUP said: “We are thrilled to have the ETOA join our sustainable fuel initiative. As a deeply embedded and trusted entity within the travel industry, the association will use its scope and reach to make significant climate fund contributions to ZEEROENERGIES and help drive the development of biofuels.”

Tim Fairhurst, Director General, ETOA, said: “As an industry, we have a responsibility to lead in the development of meaningful climate solutions, such as HTL circular biofuels. Transporting people around the globe is at the heart of what we do, and also where the bulk of our emissions originate. Therefore, we are proud to be the first organisation to support ground breaking initiatives, like ZEEROENERGIES, and to actively contribute towards the decarbonisation of our sector.”

After the power sector, transportation is the second largest emitter of global greenhouse gases (GHGs), representing around 15% of the global share. Emissions from the sector have nearly doubled since 1990, which has ultimately contributed to the continued rise in temperatures – with 2024 being declared the hottest year on record. Without effective intervention, climate change will continue to weaken economic growth and disrupt industries around the globe.
