ZEERO

The “butterfly effect” describes how a single, seemingly small action can set off a chain of events that lead to major change. In the same way, traveller climate contributions can trigger transformative outcomes, driving positive impact across the entire travel and tourism sector.

ZEERO unifies isolated efforts, shifting from fragmented climate actions to a shared, industry-wide commitment, channelling contributions into a steady flow of funding to support globally scalable infrastructure, biofuels, and regenerative solutions. This model delivers measurable environmental and community benefits for destinations around the world, enabling travel brands to communicate credible, purpose-driven narratives that strengthen resilience, reputation, and long-term value.

ZEERO is a purpose-driven, award-winning climate and environmental solutions company committed to delivering long-term, scalable projects and innovations with a mission to decarbonise the travel and events industries.

ETOA are leading the way

ETOA are leading the way by using our systems to measure their own impact. Revenue from ETOA’s commercial workshops will help fund the development and delivery of sustainable, circular fuels, renewables and nature-based solutions.

The ETOA and its members hold immense potential to help accelerate the solutions and positive transformation of the travel industry. ZEERO projects can be included in a partners climate action plan, demonstrating a member’s commitment to capacity building and future proofing tourism. ZEERO’s model and projects are grounded in collaborative, regenerative and circular principles providing the substance behind sustainability storytelling backed by real-world impact.

Our partnership is here to offer a simple, tangible way to show how travel can leave communities with a positive footprint, by converting agriculture and food waste and wastewater (sewage) into low carbon circular fuels – 81% lower in emissions than fossil fuels – helping to transition away from fossil fuels and bringing energy independence to regions – solving two of our greatest challenges, emissions reduction and waste management.

For ETOA members, ZEERO offers a range of customisable options based on adding a simple micro contribution of around €3 to each booking, combining collective efforts to accelerate progress from commitments to practical impacts, allowing investments in waste management, sustainable fuels, renewables, and nature-based solutions.

ZEERO has a shared responsibility, shared success model. ‘Share Points’ are issued with each €3 climate contribution, allowing for shared ownership and voting rights for projects, turning every trip into an investment into your own and our industry’s future while contributing to and accelerating global decarbonization.

Once you achieve 100,000 share points, you can choose to convert them into actual shares of the energy projects you have supported, or you can choose to donate them to a foundation – or you can leave them as share points, which will continue to hold voting rights.

By having a model with saleable fuels, we can reinvest revenues to scale up the development of further plants to turn more waste into low carbon fuels.

ZEERO’s founding team has identified a renewable energy technology called Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL). This innovation tackles both waste and emissions – converting food waste, agricultural waste and wastewater (sewage) into biocrude oils that are 81% lower in emissions than fossil fuels and can be refined into SAF (sustainable aviation fuel), marine diesel and petroleum.  It is also possible to add a module to the small HTL units (the size of two shipping containers) to convert the biocrude into a useable diesel to power generators, thus bringing energy independence to communities.

The ZEERO founders have succeeded in getting the right to licence this patented technology from the United States Department of Energy and the United States National Laboratory, and there is currently one prototype unit in operation.  It is the intention to scale up the manufacture of these units.

Keeping things simple is of utmost importance, however taking a broad, holistic approach is also important.  ZEERO therefore invests into renewable energy technology but will always invest into high integrity nature projects too, whether that be land or ocean-based projects, such as the restoration or conservation of forests, mangroves or coral reefs.

ZEERO’s HTL biofuels will be financed through a blended funding model, drawing from a mixture of sources; municipalities, local partners, climate contributions from the tourism sector and fuel offtake agreements with airlines, cruise and coach tour operators, helping to drive a long-term steady stream of funding towards the HTL projects, creating a self-reinforcing circular bioeconomy.  This Public-Private-Philanthropic partnership (PPP) model fosters direct collaboration and benefit-sharing, it’s a way to mobilize money, reduce risk and align diverse interests towards shared goals.

ZEERO is currently in discussions with twelve countries on installing different size plants on cities in the US, Europe, the Middle East and Far East as well as smaller towns and islands – in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and also French Polynesia. The task is huge, but doable if we have all hands-on deck!

The fuels produced through ZEERO’s investments will be sold.  Partners or investors wishing to either purchase the physical fuels or work with our ‘Book & Claim’ system will have priority over external requests where possible.  The ‘Book & Claim’ system is a type of ‘offset’ mechanism but for transition sustainable fuels where the physical delivery of fuels is not easy, possible or inefficient.  A chain of custody model, registry and public ledger using blockchain technology is provided which will enable partners to claim the biofuels and the emission reductions, no matter where their operations are located.

Each ZEERO partner will have access to a dashboard and a projects page that will show the projects that they have invested into and how many contributions have been made, along with the estimated carbon reduction achieved.

On a basic carbon reduction cost comparison, each €1 invested will reduce 10kgs of CO2e – compare this to a flight from London to New York by a major UK airline, this works out at 1/3rd of the cost of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) added to that flight booking, however this would be a one off purchase, but when investing into ZEERO, those funds create fuel that is sold, with most of the revenue being snowballed into creating more such projects – this is why ownership is important.

Want to know about your company’s emissions?  ZEERO also offers free award-winning tools to measure, report and manage carbon emissions – whether this be for corporate travel, premises, booking tools or even to calculate the carbon of a whole tour, from flights to hot air balloon rides! The tour calculator will be launched end of Q4 2025. Our emission calculation methodologies are based on the international framework and standards: DEFRA-Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, GHG Protocol, HCMI-Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative, Greenview, Google TIM, Cirium.
