Idegenforgalmi Adó
The tourist tax (Idegenforgalmi adó) is a local tax decided by each municipality (Act C of 1990 on local taxes article 30-34) and can vary within a destination (if they have multiple districts such as in Budapest). There are over 3,000 municipalities in Hungary and information on whether a tourist tax is applicable in each municipality can be found here.
The rate levied is set by each municipality up to the maximum amount set by national government and is either:
- a percentage of the room cost up to 4% or,
- a fixed amount per person per night (up to the maximum amount set by national government of HUF 300 plus the cumulative inflation rate. Thus in 2020, the maximum amount is approximately HUF 500).
Below is information on Budapest. Other destinations rates can be found here.
Budapest
In Budapest, the tourist tax is decided by each municipality/district (1-16) except districts 17 to 23 and Margitsziget where it is decided by the General Assembly of Budapest (Fovaros Onkormanyzata).
In Budapest city centre, the tax is mainly 4% of the net cost of the room (excluding VAT and breakfast).
Further information below can be found by clicking on the name of each district.
